Lately, I have been hearing from many coaches, consultants and other service professionals about online networking. Many have admitted to having networked online for some time, but then giving up on this activity because they weren’t seeing results.

As I talked to them, I discovered that many experiences were similar in some way. It turns out that many solopreneurs make the same mistakes while networking online. You will not be able to use online networking effectively if you are making these mistakes. You will just be spending time networking online, but you will not see any results.

Here are these mistakes how to correct them:

Mistake 1: You Are Networking In The Wrong Online Networking Forums. If your online networking objective is to get clients, you should network in the forums and networking communities that your potential clients frequent. For example, if you are a life coach who works with women, you should network in the communities frequented by your target market (women).

If you are frequenting a community created around your favorite sport, you will have fun talking sports, but are not likely to generate new coaching clients.

How to correct it: Find communities frequented by your target market and start participating in them.

Mistake #2: You Are Not Networking Online On A Regular Basis. If you are only networking when you need to get clients, you are wasting your time. Networking is not a one-time action; rather, it is a process of having others get to know you and building relationships with them. You will need to network continuously to raise your online visibility and develop relationships with others.

How to correct it: Make online networking a part of your schedule. Spend time every single week on networking in the communities frequented by your target market. Networking consistently is the key to developing long lasting relationships and attracting more clients.

Mistake #3: You Are Not Inviting People You Are Networking With To Subscribe To Your Newsletter. The best way to continue building relationships with people you meet during online networking is to invite them to subscribe to your newsletter. When they do, you can continue building relationships even if you or they stop networking on the forum altogether.

How to correct it: Use your online networking signature to invite everyone you are networking with to register for your newsletter.
